The world's best designed sports stadiums 2016

Stade Velodrome, Marseille

Having undergone a €267 million makeover, The Stade Velodrome based in Marseille, France, is an iconic piece of architecture. The stadium features aj undulating fibreglass roof designed by SCAU which rises to follow the height of the extended stands and will descend down over the sides of the stadium to create a 25m deep wind break.

The roof is made from teflon-impregnated fibreglass canvas and requires virtually no maintenance. The material is stretched over a metal framework which gives the roof its flowing shape and creates a scalloped consistency across its surface, while the luminous material is lightened from inside at night to turn the stadium into a beacon of light for the surrounding area. The grand reopening of the Velodrome was at the end of October 2014, while the refurbishment of the Velodrome took three years to complete. The capacity of the stadium now reaches over 67,000.
