Architecture practice Denton Corker Marshall has begun work on a new visitor centre at Stonehenge, part of a £27m renovation by English Heritage of the site in Wiltshire.

The single-storey building will have two 'pods', one made of glass and containing a cafe, retail and education spaces, and another timber-clad pod that will house the exhibition space, information point and toilets.

A perforated, non-reflective metal canopy, whose undulating shape was inspired by that of the surrounding landscape of Salisbury Plain, will enclose both pods, and is supported by randomly arranged slender columns.

According to the architects, the building will have a low carbon footprint, with local and renewable materials used 'wherever possible'.

Haley Sharpe Design is designing the exhibition space for the centre, which is due for completion in autumn 2013.
