Woodhead designs Terminal 3 at Soekarno Hatta International Airport
Architectural practice Woodhead has designed the architecture and interiors of the new 380,000 square metre Terminal 3 at Soekarno Hatta International Airport (SHIA) in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Brief from Angkasa Pura 2 required creation of a facility that will showcase Indonesia’s technological, political and cultural aspirations and evolution through the design.
Woodhead has drawn inspiration from the existing T1 and T2 buildings at Jakarta airport for the design of Terminal 3 building to reinterpret them in a contemporary terminal setting. The design has taken into account the expression of local and regional cultural identity in an increasingly globalised world; and integration of artwork and cultural references into the structure and materials.
The terminal would cater to the national carrier Garuda’s expanding international and domestic fleet of aircraft. It is being designed as a model of efficiency and comfort overlaid with the curation of Indonesia’s unique cultural and environmental experiences for passengers.
The roof and columns of the facility have been transformed into an integrated sculptural form, merging landscape with the composition of the building in an expression of balance between human activity and the natural world.
Construction is due to be completed with the new terminal building fully operational by the close of 2015.
The Woodhead consortium won the commission against three other international design, engineering and contractor consortia.
