The new Waitrose supermarket in Berkshire, UK has received the BREEAM Award, the highest scoring assessment in retail category for demonstrating a holistic approach to the environmental aspects of its specification, design and construction.

Part of the regeneration of Bracknell town centre in Berkshire, the new £6.4 million ($9.67 million) Waitrose supermarket, which is designed by the architectural practice BDP, includes the new build stores, all of which are BREEAM assessed.

The store features many innovations, including a sustainable energy centre, and charger points for electric vehicles in the car park. The other green features of the retail outlet include green roofs, sun pipes and extensive use of timber in the cladding and construction of the canopies.

The fit-out of the store has been designed by Bamber & Reddan architectural practice. The supermarket opened its doors to the customers in November 2011.
