US Navy opens first LEED Platinum facility

US Navy has opened its $11.2 million Naval Operational Support Centre Phoenix at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, US.

The property is US Navy's first LEED Platinum-certified facility. The project has been designed by San Diego's TECTONICS and developed by Santee, California-based A&D GC Incorporation. The single-level facility, situated on a 1.85 acre-area, spans 32,055 square feet. It houses a 4,800 square feet drill hall, command staff offices, reserve unit administration areas, as well as medical and dental examination spaces. Among its other features include six classrooms, a distance learning centre, a physical fitness room, and a quarterdeck.

The centre imbibes several green features such as a 67kW solar photovoltaic solar array for on-site renewable energy. The mechanical system installed in the building uses variable frequency drives. Its landscaping incorporates native and adapted plant species to reduce water consumption. Installation of demand-control ventilation unit, an efficient chiller, a strong thermal envelope, along with use of daylighting add to the facility's sustainability.
