University Place Pierce County Library wins LEED Silver


Pierce County Library System has secured LEED Silver from the US Green Building Council for University Place Pierce County Library in Washington, US.


The library covers an area of 15,000 square feet featuring children's area, teens area, meeting rooms, a conference room, study rooms, and computer stations. It imbibes a host of eco-friendly elements such as 100% underground parking and a light colored roof which helps cool the building during summer and cuts down total energy consumption. The restrooms of the library have been fitted with low-flow toilets and other elements which reap water savings of 44% over traditional fixtures.

Reclaimed materials like furniture, flooring, doors and carpet constitute 30% of the total cost of all building materials. Further, locally-sourced building materials and recycled bookshelves comprise 34% of the total cost of all building materials. Diversion of over 95% of construction waste from reaching the landfills adds to the sustainability.
