UMass Lowell breaks ground on new residence hall

UMass Lowell has broken ground on a $54 million residence hall named University Suites.

The project has been designed by Boston's ADD Incorporation with Walsh Brothers of Boston serving as the construction manager. It will sport the architectural style and landscaping of Lowell’s historic district and will house four- and six-bed units for 472 students.

The building will be made of brick and will incorporate a U shape. It will comprise two common kitchen/lounge spaces, two quiet study rooms, as well as a group study room on all levels. A common area on its first storey will don a café, a mixed-use room, and a HDTV measuring 70 inches. There will be a courtyard outside the building which will face the Campus Recreation Centre and feature a seating area to serve outdoor events. In addition, the building will imbibe several green features. It will employ measures to run low on energy usage. Further, a portion of the facility will be formed of reclaimed materials.

The facility is due to open by 2013 end.
