U-Haul Moving and Storage of Fifth Ward wins LEED Silver
U-Haul Moving and Storage of Fifth Ward in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has bagged LEED Silver for commercial interiors from the US Green Building Council.
It is among one of two organisations in the city to receive the certification. An existing early 1930s industrial warehouse in Fifth Ward district has been retrofitted as a do-it-yourself moving and self-storage facility as part of the project.
Work involved restructuring of a 3,371 square feet space which now serves as a retail showroom. The brick walls of the space have been repurposed into double-wythe walls by similar bricks of another building in the city following the makeover. The remodelled building also houses 923 storage units with over 60,046 square feet of storage for renting trucks, trailers and towing devices, and selling self-moving and towing products and supplies.
The facility has now been equipped with day-lighting controls and occupancy sensor-based lighting systems which reap energy savings. It also incorporates an efficient HVAC unit which is coupled with a thermal envelope to slash energy usage. Further, the refurbished facility comprises low-flow fixtures which cut down water usage.
