Sir Nigel Gresley Square unveiled in Doncaster

Sir Nigel Gresley Square in Doncaster, UK which is the first public square in the city, has been unveiled by British construction company Muse Developments.

Acting as the new focal point of new Civic and Cultural Quarter (CCQ), the new Sir Nigel Gresley Square has transformed the Waterdale area of Doncaster. The name of the square honours the legendary locomotive engineer Sir Nigel Gresley who designed and oversaw the creation of world famous locomotives like the Mallard and the Flying Scotsman in Doncaster.

The architecturally appealing square features a range of comfortable seating, designer lighting, a water feature of fountains, raised lawns and flexible hard paved areas. Central to the square is a stunning eight metre high sculpture, called Danum designed by landscape architects Whitelaw Turkington.

The Sir Nigel Gresley Square is part of the first phase of the Civic and Cultural Quarter being delivered by Doncaster Council and its development partner Muse Developments. The scheme has been built by North Midland Construction.

The CCQ project is supported by the European Union as part of the European Regional Development Fund’s support for the region’s economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme. It was officially unveiled on 3 June 2012.

The square also features new civic offices, a performance venue and various other attractions created to help encourage more people back to this part of the town centre. The entire regeneration has entailed an investment of £300 million ($470.3 million).
