Singapore unveils first themed garden under Gardens by the Bay project

National Parks Board Singapore has opened Grant Associations and Wilkinson Eyre-designed Bay South, one of the three uniquely themed world-class gardens as part of the Gardens by the Bay project in Singapore.

Government-funded Gardens by the Bay project involves development of three gardens, which will reflect the culture of growing more green spaces despite rapid urbanisation in Singapore. The Gardens captures the essence of Singapore as the premier tropical Garden City with the perfect environment, which will attract people to live and work.

The country has recently unveiled Bay South, the first of the three gardens. Sprawling over 54 hectares, the Bay South has six dining areas, 18 supertrees and two climate-controlled conservatories, namely Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. The park is highlighted by science-fiction design patterns created by the architect duo.

The garden demonstrates several sustainable engineering practices. The two conservatories have been designed by Wilkinson Eyre in association with Arup, for which, the latter provided the fire and façade engineering design for the facilities. The façade of the conservatories have been created using high-performance and low-emissivity glass, which aids in mitigating the greenhouse gas effect.

The conservatories are entirely open spaces with no sub-divisions. To make the facility safer, Arup has streamlined the egress and smoke control design.
