RCA students design floating black ball

Students at London's Royal College of Art have designed a floating black ball that can follow people and even mimic the sounds they make...creepy, but cool.

Those old enough to remember cult Sixties TV series The Prisoner in which Patrick McGoohan was chased through Portmeirion by an army of menacing floating spheres, may find something eerily familiar about a new project by students at London's RCA.

This floating orb is designed to patrol 'transitional public spaces' while recording and replaying ambient sounds, to produce a delayed echo of human activity.

Electronics were programmed and inserted into the sphere in order to record and replay the surrounding sounds. Named Space Replay, the project is collaboration between Julinka Ebhardt, Francesco Tacchini and Will Yates-Johnson from the Royal College of Art.
