Pritchardville Elementary School receives LEED Silver

Pritchardville Elementary School in South Carolina, US has won LEED Silver from the US Green Building Council.

The school imbibes various green features. The roof and parking lot of the facility incorporate heat-reflective materials. The facility has been equipped with high-performance window glazing, reduced interior lighting and has been designed to maximise natural light penetration. These, coupled with efficient cooling and heat pumps, and occupancy-based automated lighting controls throughout lead to a fall in the school's energy consumption.

The school has been fitted with low-flow lavatory, shower and kitchen fixtures, dual-flush and low-flush toilets which reap water savings of 35%. The parking areas of the facility are formed of pervious concrete which allows natural filtering of storm water and cuts down the amount of pollutants entering the ecosystem.

The property features dedicated spaces for collection of recycling materials like cardboard, paper, plastic, glass, metals, and organic landscaping debris.  It has also made use of 11% of reclaimed materials during the construction process. Manufacturing 16% of building materials from within 500 miles of the site, and recycling 65% of its on site construction debris add to the sustainability.
