Populous to design Casement Park stadium

Architectural firm Populous has been appointed by the Ulster GAA to develop a design brief for the redevelopment of Casement Park in Ulster, Ireland into a stadium.

Plans are to develop the Casement Park into a 40, 000-seat stadium. The design brief required Populous to work with the community to develop a modern, all-seated stadium to replace and improve the existing basic facilities.

According to Populous, the project is a significant chapter in the already long history of Gaelic sport on this site. The team will now develop a design brief and plan public consultation events.

A formal application for planning permission will be submitted by the end of March 2013. The work on the west Belfast GAA stadium is expected to last for 21 months and be completed by 2015. The GAA will provide around £15 million ($24.2 million) of the funding with the Northern Ireland Executive through the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, contributing £61.4 million ($98.8 million).
