Perkins+Will-designed new CCAM research facility opens at Virginia
The New Research and Product Development Facility for the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) has opened at Crosspointe Centre, southeast of Richmond, Virginia which is designed by Perkins+Will.
Taking inspiration from the Technology Innovation Centre network in the UK, the new 63,000-square foot research facility has been designed with open and transparent interiors. The facility is designed to provide extensive views to the neighbouring protected wetlands.
To create a well-illuminated and ventilated environment, there is provision for permanent natural light inside the facility with a large oculus skylight in the lobby.
Along with ample day lighting, other sustainable design features of the facility include on-site water retention, use of low-emitting materials to improve indoor air quality, energy recovery in the mechanical systems, and panel-level monitoring of power consumption.
CCAM is a new model for public-private partnership in research and development between universities and industry, which will promote faster and more cost-effective transition of laboratory discoveries to commercial applications.
