Parkland County airport construction to begin in 2014

The Parkland Airport Development Corporation, along with a group of investors, is planning to begin construction of a new commercial airport at Parkland County in Alberta, Canada with an investment of around $25 million in 2014.

The new airport would be located just outside Edmonton’s city limits. The project will begin with the construction of a 5,000-foot runway on the site. Post this, a second 8,000-foot runway could also be added.

Rights have been negotiated to purchase farmland just west of Anthony Henday Drive and north of Whitemud Drive. Plans are currently afoot to start the process of seeking development approval.

The new airport is expected to be home to flight schools, private pilots, business and government jets as well as medevac flights. Businesses at the Edmonton City Centre airport will be relocated to the new location as part of the new construction.

The first runway at the City Centre Airport was closed in 2009, while closure of the second runway is not yet decided.
