OMA to masterplan new urban development in Bordeaux
Global architectural practice OMA has been commissioned by La Fabrique Métropolitaine de la Communauté Urbaine de Bordeaux to design a masterplan for a new urban development in the south of Bordeaux, France which is mainly based on the expansion of the local tram system.
The masterplan includes the creation of a new urban strategy for better integration of the tramline into the south of Bordeaux, which in turn will play a major role in the development of the city as well as create new public space.
Conceived as part of the new identity for the Porte Sud de Bordeaux (Bordeaux south gate), the masterplan includes the relocation of the tram line from its previously planned location.
The masterplan accommodates two contrasting conditions: one fast, the current Route de Toulouse; and one slow, dedicated to pedestrian traffic of the new neighbourhood's inhabitants, which will emerge around the tramline.
OMA will work on the public space along the tramline in collaboration with landscape architect Coloco, sustainability adviser EGIS CONCEPT, engineering office EGIS, and real estate adviser CBRE. The design will be executed over the coming five years.
