Nizhny Novgorod town planning board reviews football stadium project

The town planning board of Nizhny Novgorod in Russia has reviewed the preliminary design and construction developments of the new football stadium in the city ahead of the preparations for the World Cup in 2018.

The new 45 meters high stadium, which will replace Lokomotiv Stadium, will accommodate 45,000 spectators.

The board also heard the views of architects and planners. As per the new design, the open-air stadium will have round shape with all the seats situated under the roof. Its stands will be equipped with a new heating system, which is said to be a first in Russia. Gas-infrared heaters will allow to raise the temperature in the area of the seats by 10-15 degrees as compared to the atmospheric temperature.

In addition, the board also decided to cover the external design with panels to provide wind protection. Designers, however, are yet to finalise colour for facades.

The line-up of the stadium is fully compliant with The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) requirements. The project documentation and design planning will be completed in September 2013.

The stadium will host the 2018 FIFA World Cup, after which, it will be used for public events.
