Newcastle University to get new student accommodations

Graham Construction has secured a contract from the Newcastle University in Tyne and Wear, valued at £13 million ($20.22 million), for the development of the university’s new student accommodation scheme.

Scope of work involves construction of student housing schemes at Park Terrace and Kensington Terrace in the city, which will together offer 347 new bed spaces. The project involves razing of the existing buildings on Park Terrace and to use the site for the development of two new buildings.

At the Kensington Terrace, the company will demolish certain existing off-shoots and refurbish the remaining building. At both the locations, the company will introduce new block at the rear of the terraces. Additionally, all the areas between the blocks will be landscaped.

The new buildings will be constructed using pre-fabricated structural framing system. The buildings facade will be created using traditional masonry and slate, which will assist it to resemble those buildings the new blocks are replacing.

The entire project has been staged in multiple phases. Phase I, which involves development of Park Terrace, began in May 2012. Work at Kensington Terrace is scheduled to begin in April 2013. The entire project is scheduled for a wrap-up in August 2014.
