New terminal of Sacramento International Airport receives LEED Silver

The new $1 billion terminal and concourse of Sacramento International Airport in California, US have won LEED Silver from the US Green Building Council.

The airport is the second one in the state to bag the LEED Silver certification. The terminal has been designed by Corgan Associates, in association with Fentress Architects. The new central terminal and 19-gate airside concourse have the capacity to handle a maximum of 16 million passengers annually.

The terminal imbibes various green features. It has been equipped with expansive glass curtain-walls and clerestories which maximise natural light penetration inside and in turn reaps energy savings along the airside concourse. It also makes use of natural ventilation to decrease energy consumption.

The facility incorporates solar shading devices in the curtain-wall, along with low-E glass to reduce heat gain. The building structure and finishes are partly made of reclaimed materials. Installation of low-flow fixtures to cut down water usage adds to the sustainability.
