New retail and leisure balcony opens at Waterloo Station

A £25 million ($38.9 million) retail and leisure balcony has opened at the main concourse of the Waterloo station in UK, in time for London Olympics 2012.

The new balcony is 220 metre long and is the longest balcony that has been built for Olympics at any British rail. The balcony has added 20,000 square feet to the existing retail space of the station. It includes 10 new retail outlets, which have expanded eating and shopping options.

The balcony has replaced the retail outlets located on the main concourse of the station, which has helped in reducing congestion. The station underwent an extensive renovation, which involved installation of new escalators and lifts, which has enabled step-free access to Waterloo East.

The balcony was built by BAM Construct UK Limited.
