New Locust Grove Middle School bags LEED Gold
Orange County Public Schools' new Locust Grove Middle School in Virginia, US has received LEED Gold from the US Green Building Council.
The property is the first LEED Gold-certified middle school in the state and the first LEED-certified building in Orange County. It has been designed by Moseley Architects and developed by Kenbridge Construction Company, Incorporation. It spans 168,300 square feet encompassing two floors. The building comprises dedicated areas for special education and music, along with general classrooms, science labs, and a library. Among its other features include a commons area with stage, athletic gyms, locker rooms, kitchen, as well as administration offices.
The project implements a host of green features. They include installation of low-flow fixtures which cut down the facility's water consumption by 37% and reap water savings of over 700,000 gallons per year. The design of the facility offers outside views to 90% of its regularly occupied areas. Diversion of 89% of its construction debris from reaching the landfills further contributes to the sustainability factor. In addition, 59% of the building materials have been produced regionally.
