New lease of life for old RAF control centre

Construction services firm ISG is to restore a derelict Grade II listed former RAF control tower in a £1.5m refurbishment and extension project.

Working for developer Liberty Property Trust UK, ISG will strip out the interior of the Kings Hill Control Tower near Maidstone, a two-storey art deco structure built in the Thirties and used in the Second World War, to make way for 'a flexible multiuse space for a variety of publicoriented cultural and community uses' as well as a coffee shop and office space.

The building will be restored to its original condition with the refurbishment of all windows and balustrades, repairs to masonry and concrete facade and the removal of exterior finishes prior to being repainted in its original white.

In addition to restoring the historic building, the project will also see ISG construct two single-storey extensions flanking the control tower.
