New green fire station to open in Florida


The $1.6 million Tampa Fire Rescue Station No. 22 at 10871 Cross Creek Blvd in Florida, US is set to open soon.


The station will be located on about eight acres of an undeveloped parcel. The fire station and parking lot will cover a two acre-area whereas the rest of the site will be utilised for conservation. The facility will span over an area of 8,600 square feet.

The new facility will employ several green measures. They include installation of high-performance lighting and controls. The building will be equipped with solar-powered exterior lighting system and water heating. It will also comprise efficient heating and cooling system running low on energy usage. Use of bins for reclaimed materials, and native landscaping will add to the sustainability factor.

The project has been completely financed via federal stimulus funds awarded in 2009.
