Naval Medical Center San Diego opens renovated Emergency Department

The Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) has opened its newly renovated Emergency Department (ED) after completing the fourth and final phase of $10.1 million renovation project.

The four-phase renovation project has increased the number of beds and decreased the waiting times, which allows the patients to leave the waiting room early. It has also added new services such as restaurant-style pagers for patients.

Increasing the beds from 26 to 41 between the fast track area and the main ED, the new 23,800 square feet ED houses five triage bays, five high acuity beds, a resource room and locker room for providers, a state-of-the-art conference room, and $650,000 worth of new equipment. Optimised for efficiency and improved patient care, the newly renovated ED includes flat-screen televisions and free wireless internet.

The renovation has also brought improvements for hospital staff, providing a break room, a locker for every staff member, and a team station with computers for all staff, ensuring more efficient patient data processing and higher morale.

The new ED is expected to treat 75,000 patients per year. It was opened on 23 August 2012.
