Morgan Community College's Spruce Hall bags LEED Gold
Spruce Hall of Morgan Community College in Fort Morgan, Colorado, has secured LEED Gold certification from the US Green Building Council following an expansion project.
The hall opened the new addition towards the end of 2010. The addition features health occupations and science spaces. Among its various features are two spacious classrooms, two skills labs, a science lab, two computer labs, a common area supported by Cargill, offices, as well as a conference room.
The facility imbibes a host of green features. It includes strategically positioned windows which reap energy cost cuts by optimising natural light penetration. The hall has been equipped with a 19KW photovoltaic system which helps cut down electricity usage.
Presence of water-saving systems and landscaping add to the sustainability by slashing water consumption. Other eco-friendly measures include use of low-VOC adhesives, sealants, paint, carpet, and wood, as well as reclaiming of the construction debris. In addition, the facility comprises 50 new parking areas on the college's western portion, out of which six are dedicated to fuel-efficient vehicles to boost the green initiative.
