Miller secures Durham University's Business School contract

Miller Construction has been awarded a contract from Durham University for the rebuild and renovation of its Business School in Durham, UK.

Scope of the project involves reconfiguration of the internal spaces of the old Business School, located at Mill Hill Lane in Durham. The company will add two new two- and three-storey tall block to the B-School. The new building will be linked to the existing building and create two distinct courtyards.

The company will use structural glazing to develop a new curved walkway for granting access to the courtyard. Miller will also build four new lecture theatres including one Harvard-style theatre. New breakout and open meeting areas will be added to the old facility, which will accessible by both staff and students.

Plans further include provisions for new roof-top restaurant and lounge area. An integral part of the project is the transformation of the B-School's reception area to make it the focal point of the campus. It will be made accessible through a new glazed entrance.

The renovation project is also aimed at reducing the carbon footprints of the building, which will be achieved by means of installation of a ground source heat pump system, solar controlled glazing and improved heating and air circulation systems. The project is scheduled to wrap up by mid-2013.
