Metronode to build two data centres in Australia

Metronode Pty Limited (Metronode), a subsidiary of Leighton Contractors Pty Limited, has struck a AUD182 million ($178.17 million) deal with the New South Wales Government for construction of two managed data centres in New South Wales, Australia.

One of the energy efficient data centres will be located at Silverwater in Sydney and another at Illawarra region at Wollongong's southern suburb of Unanderra. Each data centre will boast capabilities to support up to up to 9MW of IT load.

The energy efficiency of the data centres will be delivered by means of direct free air-cooling and modular plant systems. Both the sites will have on-site rain water retention and harvesting system, which will prevent rain water run-off.

The centres will also have intelligent site monitoring system, which will assist in monitoring their environmental footprints. The centres will operate at average annual PUEs (Power Usage Effectiveness) of 1.2, which is almost 50% less than average PUE of about 2.4 of traditional data centres.
