Maryland Proton Treatment Centre breaks ground

The University of Maryland School of Medicine, in association with San Diego's Advanced Particle Therapy LLC, has broken ground on a $200 million Maryland Proton Treatment Centre in Baltimore, Maryland, US.

Design-build services for the new treatment centre will be offered by The Haskell Company. It will be housed in a building spanning 110,000 square feet, located in the University of Maryland BioPark on the University of Maryland’s founding campus in Baltimore. The building will also comprise retail space. It will be the first proton treatment centre in the Baltimore-Washington region.

The facility will consist of five treatment rooms. One of these rooms will incorporate a fixed beam whereas the other four will include a rotational gantry beam.

Construction on the facility is scheduled to commence soon. The centre is expected to open by 2014.
