Mansell bags contract to build student housing for Girton College

UK-based Mansell has secured a £6.8 million ($10.85 million) contract from Girton College at the University of Cambridge, UK for the construction of a new on-campus student housing.

The new residential block will be developed at Ash Court, within the main campus of the college at Huntingdon Road. The new facility will offer upgraded amenities for students as well as conference guests.

The project involves construction of 50 en-suite rooms, kitchens and a gym complex. A total of six rooms will be specifically designed to meet the requirements of physically challenged students. The project also includes renovation and external reconstruction of the college's Grade II listed swimming pool and landscaping at Ash Court.

The new residential development will feature several green elements including roof-top photovoltaic installation which will generate electricity for the building. It will also incorporate ground-source heat pumps and heat recovery from the room ventilation system. The sustainable initiatives, targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating, will help the college cut down the rate of its carbon emissions.

Work on the scheme is scheduled to begin in May 2012 and be over by July 2013.
