Manitoba Hydro Place receives LEED Platinum

Manitoba Hydro Place office tower in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada has secured LEED Platinum from the Canada Green Building Council.

The building, which opened in 2009, is the first and only large office tower in Canada to bag the certification. The 22-level building spans 700,000 square feet and has incorporated the Integrated Design Process. The facility has been developed by a collaborative venture of Manitoba Hydro and Toronto's design architects Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects, Smith Carter Architects and Engineers of Winnipeg as executive architects, and Stuttgart's climate engineers Transsolar.

The facility imbibes several green features such as gleaming solar chimney. It has also been equipped with plenty of windows which open and close depending on weather conditions. Among its other sustainable elements include a six-level waterfall in the atrium, green rooftops, as well as geothermal system to suffice heating and cooling needs. The property records over 70% fall in energy consumption over traditional office buildings by employing various energy-efficient measures.
