Leadbitter wins approval for new academy and leisure centre in UK

British construction company Leadbitter Group has secured approval from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea for the development of a new academy and leisure centre in North Kensington.

Dubbed as Kensington Aldridge Academy and Kensington Leisure Centre, the facility will be designed by Studio E. Click. It will consist of a new school, state-of-the-art leisure centre, and an enhanced children's park, which will be developed off Silchester Road, near Latimer Road station. The scheme will also offer a much improved Lancaster Green as well as new homes.

Construction of the project will be undertaken in a phased manner. Construction of Kensington Aldridge Academy is scheduled to commence in October 2012, and is scheduled for opening in September 2014. To be built in tandem with the academy, the leisure centre is also scheduled for an opening in 2014.

The estimated cost of the scheme is £57.8 million ($93.41 million). The project will be funded by the proceeds from the sale of the homes to be developed as a part of the scheme. The scheme will also benefit from £40.2 million ($64.97 million) of funding commitment from Council and a grant of £17.6 million ($28.44 million) from the government.
