Kier to develop Incubator facility at Alconbury Weald in UK

Wisbech-based Kier Construction has been awarded a £2.5 million ($3.8 million) contract to build the Incubator facility, which is the first building to be constructed on the Enterprise Campus at the low carbon development of Alconbury Weald in Huntingdonshire, UK.

To be constructed for the client and owner of the site, property group Urban&Civic, the flagship Incubator facility will be developed at the 1,420 acre Alconbury Weald site.

Designed to transform the Alconbury Weald brownfield site into a unique and inspiring place for working, living, learning and leisure, the Incubator facility on the Enterprise Campus will provide flexible spaces for small and start-up businesses. The facility will be developed by focusing on high-tech manufacturing and research & development.

Incorporating a number of environment-friendly initiatives in its design, the Incubator includes 20% recycled aggregate in the concrete structure and recycled rain water for flushing toilets. The building will also be thermally efficient, using the mass of the structure for temperature control and a mixed mode ventilation system.

Wider plans for Alconbury Weald include provision of 5,000 homes, 700 acres of green open space and investment in a range of transport, energy and community facilities to support both the new residents and the surrounding town and villages.

Construction work will start shortly and is expected to complete by the end of 2013.
