Kier to construct first University Technical College of Liverpool
UK-based Kier Construction has been awarded a contract to build Liverpool’s first University Technical College (UTC), which is designed by Shed KM, to train young people.
Estimated to cost £4.5 million ($6.86 million), the University Technical College will convert the Grade II listed Contemporary Urban Centre on Greenland Street.
Transforming the historic building, the new Life Sciences and Studio School has been designed to accommodate approximately 1,300 students in the age group of 14 to 19 years.
Retaining most of the old building’s key features, the new design has incorporated innovation labs, a life sciences wing, and a health and social care centre within the college building which was originally completed in 1898.
The new school will be operated by North Liverpool Academy. Work on the project was started in January 2013 and will be completed for the new academic year in September 2013.
