Kate Spade to roll out unique storefront design for New York store
New York-based fashion retailer Kate Spade is planning a new, bow-inspired storefront design for its new store in Upper West Side, a neighbourhood in the borough of Manhattan.
Located between 69th and 70th street, the new 1,000 square feet store will replace the existing Irish pub, Emerald Inn. Kate Spade has tested the current store design in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and Easton, Ohio; and plans to roll out the new design in New York.
The bow-inspired storefront would be a key element of the new design, with the store's doorway featuring a slight indentation rather than being flush with the walls. This will create an inward pointing V-shaped look like a bow.
The steel frame of storefront’s windows will be painted with arctic blue. The store will also feature a black awning with the retailer’s signature spade symbol. A simple understated sign without lighting will be hanged below the awning.
The store is scheduled to open in late April 2013, with the design pending approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The store would be housed in the landmarked building at 205 Columbus Avenue, which is 70 years old and in its third generation of family ownership. The building dates from 1887, when architects Philip Hubert and James Pirrson built a series of buildings on Columbus between 69th and 70th street, according to a city landmarking study.
