Johannesburg city library reopens after revamp

The Johannesburg city library in South Africa has reopened after a facelift worth about ZAR68 million ($8.78 million).

The 78-year-old facility, originally designed by John Perry, closed for upgrades in 2009. It now incorporates a contemporary style featuring three new stories which are positioned in the centre of the building. The first two levels have been equipped with advanced electronic systems including public access PCs with internet service, and Wi-Fi access. The third glassed double volume floor has been designed to host exhibitions.

The refurbished library sports a new section for public. This section features individual listening and viewing stations to allow the public to listen to recorded music and view films. The seat capacity of the building has now been raised from 255 to 566 seats. The authentic English look of the facility has been retained post upgrades.
