Jason bruges’ airport lounge design set to fly

Jason Bruges Studio has been commissioned to create an innovative lounge for passengers as part of the major expansion and on- going arts programme at San Diego airport. The commission from the San Diego Airport Authority follows the studio winning a globally held competition.

Due to be launched next summer, the New Media Lounge will be a non-commercial environment, inspired by the unique and varied surroundings of the airport. The space will allow customers to scan in their boarding passes, relax, recharge their electronic devices and interact with the room. The floor and furniture of the lounge is to be designed to reflect the landscape, terrain, cliffs and Pacific coastal areas surrounding the airport, while large lamps hanging from the ceiling will replicate the San Diego airspace, with projections of detailed flight information relevant to each individual passenger. The lounge will also contain a range of interactive elements related to local wildlife and the theme of 'migration', which will be prevalent in the installation.

Jason Bruges Studio, with architecture practice Gensler, will work closely with San Diego-based researchers to exploit their local knowledge, ensure accuracy in its portrayal of the area, and best practice on themes such as the environment and sustainability.
