Recently constructed Fire Station 4 at the city of Iowa City in the US has secured the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification from the US Green Building Council.

The facility secured LEED Gold certification for its design, construction, and positive impact on employee and environmental health.

Fire Station 4 facility preserved over 75% of the project site open space, and recycled more than 85% of construction waste, keeping it out of the landfill. The facility also reduced the heat island effect on more than 99% of the project site.

Besides saving more than 50% of energy costs, the facility utilised building materials that were made from recycled materials. It also installed geothermal and high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. Windows, doors, and other construction techniques allowed for natural lighting and exterior views.

Located at 2008 Dubuque Road on the city’s north side, Fire Station 4 was opened in October 2011 to provide fire protection services for residents and businesses on the northeast side of Iowa City. Rohrbach Associates, PC of Iowa City was architectural consultant for the project.

With Fire Station 4 securing LEED Gold, the number of Iowa City facilities that have earned LEED recognition has reached three. Earlier Fire Station 2 at 301 Emerald Street, and the East Side Recycling Center's Environmental Education Center at 2401 Scott Blvd earned LEED certifications.
