Howard Theatre upgrades enter final stage

The Howard Theatre in Washington, DC, is in the final stages of a $29 million renovation project worth.

The project, commencing in 2010 end, is being executed by developer Chip Ellis. The 12,000 square feet theatre will possess a seating capacity of 650, or standing room for 1100 following the makeover. The balcony on the second floor of the building will now contain a little less than 100 permanent seats while the first level will comprise standing or banquet seating facilities.

The stage of the theatre will also undergo an overhaul and will now incorporate DJ booths on either sides. The project will further lead to the creation of a new basement. The basement will sport various amenities including dressing rooms, a green room, a spacious kitchen, as well as restrooms.

The original 17 windows on the exterior building facade will be restored as part of the project. There will also be installation of a new free standing statue in the front part of the facility post upgrades.

The remodelled theatre is scheduled to reopen by 9 April 2012.
