Housing for homeless and low-income group to open in Virginia

A $6.7 million housing with single-room-occupancy (SRO) units is set to open at The Crossings at Fourth and Preston in Charlottesville, Virginia, US.

The building will house a total of 60 single-room-occupancy units out of which half will be targeted at people earning up to $27,250 per year. The remaining units will provide stable housing for the chronically homeless people of the area. The facility will sport a rectangular shape and will be made of brick.

The building will feature studio apartments with each spanning nearly 360 square feet. The apartments will be equipped with a twin bed, a refrigerator, a range oven, basic furniture pieces, a window, a thermostat and a large bathroom. A wall in every unit will don one of four accent shades including burnt orange, navy blue, slate blue or sage green. The first level of the facility will house a row of white mailboxes, a fitness room, vending machines, coin-operated laundry, as well as a community lounge.

The project has been financed by private sources, local government funding, as well as federal tax credits for low-income housing. The new property is due to open by 10 April 2012.
