Holder Mathias opens purpose-built venue at Cardiff Bay

London-based Holder Mathias Architects has opened a purpose-built venue named 'Doctor Who Experience' at Port Tegir in Cardiff Bay, London.

Located next to the BBC Wales Roath Lock studios, the Doctor Who Experience has been conceived as a standard tent with the sole purpose of injecting some distinctiveness into it, while keeping within the budget.

The purpose-built venue is a silver and blue structure, which has been made by taking standard components and arranging them in such a way as to create a sinuous form that changes in section throughout its length.

The Doctor Who Experience includes a new water taxi pier, featuring a Doctor Who trades. It offers fans of the sci-fi show, the chance to take a ride in a life-size Tardis as well as to come face-to-face with some of the Time Lord’s enemies. It also features dozens of rare artefacts and props from the show’s 49-year history.

The exhibits include everything from early monsters such as, the Silurians, Ice Warriors and Zygons to today's props such as the Silence spaceship and the Doctor’s cradle. It traces the development of the Tardis right through the honeycomb white plastic of the ‘80s to the complex organic, almost alive, version of today.
