Holden Cancer Centre opens in Iowa

The new $12 million Holden Cancer Centre of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has been opened in Iowa, US.

The facility, covering two stories of the Pomerantz Family Pavilion, features 64,000 square feet of revamped area. The patient space in the new building is more than the capacity of the existing clinic which is housed in an adjacent building. The new facility accommodates new clinic and infusion bay areas, 37 exam rooms, and a pair of procedure rooms. The number of chairs fitted in the infusion suite positioned in the building's second level has been raised from 28 to 40. Out of this, eight have been installed in private rooms.

The new clinic enhances its functionality with incorporation of several features such as centralized and team-specific staff workrooms. There is a new pneumatic tube system which takes lesser time to deliver samples to the lab. Among other features of the facility are an on-site pharmacy, as well as a larger and more centralized research zones.

The infusion bay space has been equipped with wood panelling and trim and different ceiling heights. The area also consists of individual electronic shading controls to enhance patients' comfort level, along with half height bay walls to allow patients to interact with family or other patients.

The facility features a skywalk which connects to the pavilion from the outside. The skywalk is adorned in artistic pieces and offers glimpses of the surrounding area. The facility also sports a new healing garden, a fireplace and built-in aquarium in the centre.
