HKS-designed new educational building opens in Virginia

The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM) has opened a new $14.1 million extension called Veterinary Medicine Instruction Addition (VMIA) in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Designed by HKS Incorporated, a US-based architecture firm, the new VMIA is spread over an area of about 22,000 square feet.

It accommodates faculty offices, flexible instructional space and study areas, which have been organised around a primary circulation zone. The extension also houses clinical techniques laboratory.

The entire facility has a contemporary and inviting environment. The classrooms have a theatre-style seating and ceiling; and have carpeted floor. VMIA serves as the new entrance to the college and comprise a host of green features, which enabled it to win LEED Silver certification.

Construction of the facility began in mid-2011 and was completed by August 2012. The facility is scheduled to have an official opening on 19 October 2012.
