Hillsboro Ballpark in Portland gets dual turf system

Austin-based sports contractor Hellas Sports Construction has started installation of its patented Matrix dual turf system at new Hillsboro Ballpark, a baseball stadium in Portland.

The dual turf system, designed exclusively for the stadium in partnership with D.A. Hogan & Associates and Hellas, features two different types of turf namely Velocity XP and Matrix Turf to ensure maximum playability.

Hillsboro’s dual turf system is designed by architects at SRG Partnership and D.A. Hogan & Associates’ landscape architect, Eric Gold. They are working in collaboration with general contractor Hoffman Construction and subcontractor Bernhardt Golf.

Hillsboro Ballpark’s outfield will feature Hellas’ original Matrix turf system, while the infield and warning track is composed of Velocity XP, a 2.5-inch deep artificial turf product. This combination of synthetic fibers lends itself to create a playing surface comparable to that of real grass, unlike any other baseball field’s synthetic turf system.

Hellas’ flagship product Matrix Turf system is considered to be suitable for baseball. It is comprised of special monofilament yarns in different sizes, shapes and colours, creating the best traction and stability for athletes, while ensuring the highest durability and playability of any turf product in the industry.

Hillsboro Ballpark will be open to host other baseball games, as well as soccer and lacrosse matches, when not in use by the Hillsboro Hops. It is slated to open on 17 June 2013.
