HDR TMK to design Center of Integrated Diabetes Research Building in Munich

Architectural practice HDR TMK has been selected to design the Center of Integrated Diabetes Research at the Helmholtz Center in Munich, Germany, which will be its first science + technology project in Europe.

Consisting of more than 50,000 square feet of space, the new $41.6 million building will be a four-storey multidisciplinary life science research centre, dedicated to diabetes research.

The Biosafety Level 2 research centre will facilitate basic research, translational research, epidemiology and clinical applications as they relate to diabetes. Acting as a catalyst in curbing the diabetes epidemic and the associated impacts on the country’s economy and medical system, the centre will cater to about six million diagnosed diabetes cases in Germany.

Said to be the first-of-its-kind facility in Germany, the Center of Integrated Diabetes Research will blur the lines between science, research and healthcare.

Upon completion, the facility will house strategic clusters of researchers working together to tackle one of the major health challenges of Germany.

The project is expected to complete by spring 2016.
