Harpa concert hall in Iceland scoops Architizer A+ Awards 2013
Harpa concert hall and conference centre in Reykjavik, Iceland has won the Jury’s Award in the +Light category at the Architizer A+ Awards 2013 for its use of light as an architectural element.
Designed by Danish architectural practice Henning Larsen Architects in collaboration with Batteriið Architects, the Harpa Cioncert hall features a façade in the south, which is created in close collaboration with the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.
Light and transparency play a great role in the design of the building. The crystalline structure features geometric structures in its façade, which reflects light and establishes a sparkling dialogue between the building, city and surrounding landscape.
Dematerialising itself as a static entity, the building responds to the surrounding colours from the city lights, ocean and sky. In this way, the expression of the facade continuously changes and the building appears in an endless variation of colour.
Harpa concert hall and conference centre in Reykjavík was opened to the public on 4 May 2011.
