Ground broken on new athletic facility of Southwestern College

Ground has been broken on Field House, an athletic facility of Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California.

Overlooking the college's DeVore Stadium, the new athletic facility will be a 40,000 square feet development. The four-storied Field House has been designed by Gensler Architects and will enclose the campus-facing end zone.

The new facility will resonate the architectural character of the Field House and will reflect the Mayan-theme of the existing campus. The Field House will have an open layout and will feature several windows that will offer panoramic views of the campus.

On the ground level, the new facility will accommodate team locker and training facilities at the playing field-level. The second level will accommodate strength and conditioning facilities, while four new classrooms and a 140-seat mixed media auditorium will occupy the third level of the building. The fourth level will have Health and Exercise Sciences faculty offices and tutorial spaces for student-athletes.

The project also involves development of a 6,000 square feet Central Plant that will provide high efficiency cooling and heating for new as well as existing campus buildings. Balfour Beatty will also install new synthetic turf in both DeVore Stadium and the football practice fields. The new turf will offer water saving and require low-maintenance

The Field House development forms an integral part of the $90 million phase I of construction under Proposition R of the college. The project is being funded by Proposition R, which was approved by the Californian voters in November 2008.
