Gensler flies in with airport plan
Architecture practice Gensler has unveiled its vision for a new airport for the South East that
would float in London’s Thames Estuary.
A hypothetical project, named the London Britannia Airport, would 'position the capital as the global gateway for Europe and would be the world's most innovative infrastructure development this century,' says Gensler.
The project, says the design, if realised, would also reduce environmental impact, cost and disruption to London. Gensler's managing director Chris Johnson described the project as 'a genuine 21st-century airport' that would create 'a new standard for the world, minimising nuisance and maximising environmental benefits'.
Gensler also proposes turning Heathrow airport into an 'eco city' called Heathrow Gardens creating homes for some 300,000 people and employment for more than 200,000.
