Four Seasons hotel in Shanghai unveils porcelain sculptures
Four Seasons private residences in Pudong, China has installed two major porcelain sculptures designed by French Canadian artist Pascale Girardin at its main entrance.
Girardin designed a large porcelain chandelier inspired by a tea tree, in which, each element evokes a part of the tea plant: leaves, flowers, blossoms, and fruits. Invited to make the artwork in China, she and her team travelled to Jingdezhen, the country’s “Porcelain Capital,” famous for its production of fine, white porcelain.
Each component for the chandelier was carefully positioned using 3D modeling. In Shanghai, elements found in the chandelier were integrated with an adjacent wall-shelving unit, which was filled with hundreds of porcelain objects reminiscent of an old library. Tea leaves and flowers appear to have been windswept among the stylised books, calligraphy rolls, and brushes, giving the room a feeling of time standing still.
Four Seasons also commissioned her to create yet another installation, consisting of over 200 white porcelain sculptures inspired by traditional Chinese gardens. These pieces were expected to fill a large bookcase in the private residence’s lobby and event.
