FLCC opens new Student Centre

Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC) has opened the new $29.6 million Student Centre in its Ontario County campus in New York, US on 19 March 2012.

The facility spans 78,000 square feet spreading over two levels. The first floor of the building houses a new bookstore which doubles the size of the existing one, as well as a One Stop Centre. Its second storey comprises a new cafeteria which is twice the size of the current one, along with a new performance room sporting removable stage. An auditorium with a seat capacity of 411, Student Life rooms, and a new more spacious student lounge are among the other features of the facility's second level.

The centre is also the first public building in Ontario County to receive LEED certification from the US Green Building Council with incorporation of several green features. It includes installation of 192 solar panels on its roof. The building has also been equipped with high-performance heating and cooling units.

The facility sports low-flow plumbing systems which reduce its water consumption. Further, its landscaping has been designed to run low on maintenance. Use of 95% reclaimed structural steel, New York-quarried stone, and sustainably harvested wood products add to the sustainability.

Construction of the centre forms part of the first phase of a $48 million two-phased expansion and renovation project, out of which $18 million has been earmarked for refurbishments. Half of the project funds have been contributed by the State University of New York. The remaining money has been provided by local sources including private donations, sales tax revenue and charge-backs.
