Edmonton International Airport unveils new living wall

Canada's Edmonton International Airport terminal has unveiled a new Living Wall.

The living wall has been conceptualized by Stantec, and created by design practice Green over Grey. The wall, with an area of 1,420 square feet, is considered to be the largest in any airport in the world.

The design of the main central Living Wall have been inspired by the high altitude cloud formations. The design of the upper walls draws reference to Canadian paintings by The Group of Seven and Emily Carr.

The living wall has been created using more than 8,000 individual living plants, from 32 unique species. Some of the larger species incorporated in the living wall will be allowed to grow up to the height of 10-feet out of the wall. The plants of the wall will grow in soil-free, hydroponic environment, which is similar to their vertical growth in nature.

The living wall offers a visual treat to the passengers. It also assists in improving the internal environment of the airport by releasing more oxygen and removing carbon dioxide and other air pollutants.
